Starting Your Journey

Whether you already have an idea for your new online small business or you just have an interest in how to set up an online small business, this course will be of benefit to you.

Over the course of the next four weeks you will learn how to select the most appropriate type of online business format for your business, reflect on what it takes to be a successful online business operator, boost your business inspiration and refine your direction for your business. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn about and use practical business planning tools such as the Business Model Canvas, SWOT analysis, SMART goal setting, action planning and more.

Throughout this course you will learn of Jordan and her desire to start her own online business. You will have the chance to engage in discussions with other learners, collaborate and help Jordan on her journey through business planning.

Sharing your ideas

During each week of the course you will have the opportunity to share your views and ideas behind a series of scenarios. At times, you may be asked to share your business ideas with fellow learners. This is a great opportunity to gain feedback from others and refine your thoughts and improve your business plans. Who knows, you may even find other learners with similar ideas and thoughts!

However, it is also important to remember that the world is a small and highly competitive place, so if you do have that ‘breakthrough idea that will change the world’, you may choose to keep some of the details to yourself.

When sharing any information about your ideas, you need to carefully weigh up the risk involved by sharing your ideas against this great opportunity to receive feedback and learn from others. Whether you discuss your ideas in full or in part is completely up to you; we just want you take a moment to consider the possible repercussions before you jump in.

We recommend that you find out more about protecting your intellectual property, before sharing your thoughts and ideas. Your local intellectual property government site should be able to help you. We’ve listed the government sites for Australia and the UK in the See Also section.
