Assessing your skills
Now that you’ve gone through the process of identifying and reflecting upon your skills, you need to consider how to assess your skill levels.
As we established earlier, soft skills are more challenging to measure and demonstrate compared to hard skills.
However, you could consider the idea of creating your own skills matrix – that is, a document that lists the general skills employers are looking for (communication, teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, time management, planning etc) and self-assessing your abilities against each on a scale of 0-10. These general skills are also known as transferable skills – skills that can be transferred from one setting to another.
As we covered in the previous step, reflecting on your experiences is key for helping you identify examples of when, how and where you have demonstrated these skills. You can then start to make a judgment on the skills you’re good at and what you need to develop for a chosen career path.
