The need for differentiation

Signs of difficulties with language include:

Understanding (Receptive) Use (Expressive language)
Inappropriate/unrelated response to questions Limited range of vocabulary
Delayed response to questions or comments General, all purpose words used (that one, thingy, ‘do’ for a range of other verbs)
Difficulties with remembering and/or following instructions Word retrieval errors (being unable to think of a word or using the wrong word)
Repeated breaking of rules/apparent poor choices around behaviour Short, simple sentences
Difficulties with keeping up with a conversation, particularly in a group Grammatical errors beyond the age when these would be typical
Blank expression Unusual sentence structure
Failure to ‘get’ jokes Giving too much or too little information
Difficulties with reading between the lines Unawareness of listeners’ response to what is being said (e.g. whether they are following, interested etc.)
  Difficulties with organising and structuring spoken and written stories and reports

Red flags which may indicate the need for further investigation of language skills include:

• Reluctance to engage in lessons, particularly those that involve activities such as discussion, or to complete homework

• Difficulties with friendships

• Failure to meet age-related expectations

• Failing of the Year One phonics test

• Literacy difficulties

• Concerns around behaviour

Pupils with SLCN often experience difficulties with social relationships, because making and maintaining these relationships relies so heavily on language and the ability to process and respond to language quickly. Difficulties with understanding can make these pupils especially vulnerable in social situations, both online and in face to face contact with others. Incomplete understanding or misunderstanding of RSHE lesson content could increase this vulnerability and/or cause anxiety for pupils.
