Future plans

Many applicants will not even include this section as part of their CV. This is a mistake.

If you think back to the start of the course, we pointed out that, while CVs may look as if they’re backward looking, to your past ‘story’, they’re actually all about creating a picture of what you’ll be able to do in the future, which is why stating your future plans is so important.

But is this section all about telling the prospective employer where YOU want to be in five or ten years? Well, no, not really. You see the recruiter is really interested in what you can bring to the company now and in the future, so you have to frame your statement in terms of how your future plans will benefit the company while you are achieving your ambitions.

Here are five samples of future plans statements. What are their strengths? What are their weaknesses? Please discuss your answers in the comments area.

Sample 1

I aim to become the manager of the restaurant providing excellent food and service to my customers while respecting and managing a top-notch staff. I will accomplish this goal by working my way up the ladder and proving my determination and expertise to the ownership group while gaining the respect of my co-workers.

Sample 2

I will become a leader in my organisation helping transform it into an organisation that respects all its stakeholders — while at the same time being the best husband and father I can be.

Sample 3

I will provide the best technical support and customer service to our clients helping improve their business and lives striving to solve problems with a positive attitude that spreads to my co-workers.

Sample 4

I will become a well-known and respected leader in the food industry revitalising the ways food is produced and marketed making healthier products to help people live better lives.

Sample 5

My aim is to become a professor within five years. To achieve this, I will improve the quality of learning and teaching provision for all students in this College and, in doing so, raise not only the esteem, but also the desirability of this university so that it attracts more students.
