This week you focused on key teamwork skills and their relationship to employability. In this article, Andrea North-Samardzic provides a summary of what was covered.
Organisations worldwide, from small start-ups to huge multinational conglomerates use teams.
In short, teamwork matters.
To show your value to your current and future employers, demonstrating your effectiveness at teamwork is paramount. This is why we have shown you the voices of employers and employees, demonstrating that highly developed and recognised teamwork skills and abilities are extremely important.
Yet teamwork can be difficult and complex.
While most organisations use teams to organise, there are many different types of teams. The two types of teams that are increasingly commonplace are virtual teams and cross-functional teams.
The challenge with these is that while they are often used, they are often subject to dysfunction. All teams have benefits and challenges and being aware of them is essential for effective teamwork. The models we have addressed this week can help you make greater sense of these issues.
It is also why we focused on conflict management this week.
The ability to effectively manage conflict is one of the most highly-prized skills a team member can have. All teams will encounter conflict one day – your skills in conflict management will therefore make you more valuable to the team, your organisation and also to your own career.
We also covered the important topic of teamwork and diversity.
As individuals, our cultural backgrounds mean that we may approach teamwork differently. Yet differences can lead to conflict. In addition to having the skills to manage conflict, having the knowledge to understand sources of these differences is just as important.
As we travel the world in our careers and work in multicultural teams, knowing why we need team diversity and how it works in practice is key knowledge to have.
In our last activity we explored the question ‘What kind of team player am I?’
The 5Cs of team member competency are a clear and concise way to examine and self-reflect on our own expertise at teamwork. This examination and self-reflection will be a bigger part of next week’s activities.
