This course will ask the question what does philosophy have to offer us as project management professionals and academics. To answer this question we will begin by identifying contemporary issues in the construction industry. You will then share your views on construction cost management and explore the distinguishing factors between the two broad terms, projects and construction projects. We will move on to discuss the importance of research in challenging contemporary issues before delving into an overview of conducting research in construction project cost management. We will identify different types of questions and the importance of aligning your aim and objectives correctly.

Welcome to Research for Construction Management

What does research philosophy has to offer us as project management professionals and academics? Construction research is important in a fast-changing and complex world. In the video, Dr Daisy Nwaozuzu explains how this open short course will explore the research philosophies that underpin the research process.

We look forward to exploring this topic with you over the next two weeks, as well as providing you with the tools to understand how you might improve your own area of practice.

In the first week of this open short course you will:

  • Identify contemporary issues in the construction industry and examine how these might impact on cost management
  • Explore the distinguishing features of complex projects
  • Reflect on the importance of research in challenging contemporary issues
  • Learn how to plan a research project, exploring the differences between the research question, the aim and the objectives

Meet the team

Your lead educator on this course is Dr George Agyekum-Mensah, senior lecturer in Quantity Surveying and Project Management in the School of Energy, Construction and Environment at Coventry University. His areas of expertise are in project management, quantity surveying and sustainable project delivery systems, as well as innovation and automation in construction.

George is joined by Dr Daisy Nwaozuzu, assistant lecturer in Research Skills at Coventry University.

You will be learning on this module with Danny McGough, course director for the MSc Construction Management with Building Information Management (BIM) at Coventry University. Danny has worked on a number of complex research projects focusing on BIM and sustainable development.
